Crack Magazine and MUBI present Underscore: Music events inspired by film.
Underscore’s inaugural edition is an immersive event exploring the world of Andrea Arnold’s Bird – a tender and surprising coming-of-age fable, now streaming exclusively on MUBI. Carlos O’Connell of Fontaines D.C. will join us for an exclusive DJ set. As well as playing guitar in the biggest band of 2024, O’Connell also found time to star in Bird, playing a pivotal role in perhaps the film’s most memorable musical moment. Carlos will be joined by Space Afrika, the Manchester duo whose touches of industrial field recordings and inner-city texture echo the character of the film.
To “underscore” means to emphasise. In cinema, the “underscore” is the ambient soundtrack which defines the mood of a scene. These aren’t screenings, they are events designed and curated to bring a film’s themes to life and connect in a different way.
We'll also be exhibiting some never-before-seen on-set photography, by Robbie Ryan and Atsushi Nishijima, lovingly printed by Rapid Eye.
