Institute of Contemporary Arts

An interactive workshop exploring gender feelings through creative upcycling techniques. In this workshop you will explore words/feelings/goals for expressing your gender (expression) and channel it into making your own DIY clothing item. Attendees will engage in writing exercises and a wrap up Q+A discussion forum to discuss queer style and related resources.

Attendees are asked to bring one clothing item that they would like to upcycle. For attendees who don’t have anything to bring, a small selection of clothing items and gender affirming wear will be donated by G(end)er Swap for attendees to use.

This workshop is open to young people aged 18 – 30. After the workshop, we'll also be having a small end-of-year celebration with some festive food, games, and holiday crafting activities.
Santi (they/he) is a DIY fashion-ista, an LGBTQ+ grassroots organiser, public speaker and the Founder and Creative Director of G(end)er Swap. Their mission is to create wider societal understanding (and celebration) of gender diversity – through the lens of fashion. They create and deliver style workshops and digital resources across social media platforms for the Trans community as well as provide D&I consultancy for allies running their own social enterprises. For their work, Santi has been featured in BRICKS magazine, Open Democracy, Love Hero’s fashion campaign, and the Smiley Movement. Santi is also a drag performer and the creator of a new upcycled clothing Pretty Boy Spice.

G(end)er Swap is the first LGBTIQ+ clothing outreach organisation based in the UK that supports Trans and GNC folks to access clothes and community via style pop-ups, workshops and consultancy.

The Young ICA is a hub for young people interested in art, writing, politics, and connecting with other young people. Throughout the year, we hold skills-based workshops led by artists, community talks, reading series, and much more at the ICA. Young people from Westminster get free memberships and we aim to work with schools, organisations, and individuals located in the borough, but our programming is open to all young people.
