To celebrate the launch of Rosanna McLaughlin’s novel Sinkhole: Three Crimes, there will be readings from invited writers and artists Ellie Hoskins, Bod Mellor, Shola von Reinhold, and Rosanna McLaughlin.
A novel in three parts, Sinkhole: Three Crimes submerges readers in a grotesque and comical world on the edge of collapse – much like our own. Britain is immersed in a toxic swamp, and sinkholes are opening up in the ground with alarming frequency. Amid the mayhem, three crimes take place: Stonehenge has been stolen, a porn-addicted ghostwriter faces the phantoms of her past, and a murder takes place among expats in a Goan village.

Envisaged as the third iteration of the spirit of Lola Montez (Lola, Maria, Mario), Montez Press was formed in 2012. Montez has since commissioned and published experimental work by artists, writers and thinkers with a focus on queer and intersectional feminist practices through the lens of artists’ writing. Montez is committed to curiosity, questioning established methods and systems, and engaging in open conversation and dialogue. Montez Press’ methods are deeply collaborative. Montez seeks to support unexpected creators, including those who may not receive institutional support due to social and economic systemic prejudices. Montez commits to a rigorous editorial process in its effort to produce work that takes risks and surprises and challenges the reader.
Rosanna McLaughlin is an author and cultural critic. Double-Tracking, her debut collection of satirical essays and short fiction on the subject of middle-class duplicities, was published by Carcanet in 2019. An original proposal for the book was shortlisted for the Fitzcarraldo Essay Prize in 2016. Rosanna has written on subjects including Ariana Grande, the legacy of Section 28, and the weaponisation of Ana Mendieta. In 2017, she was writer-in-residence for the British Council Caribbean, researching the political fallout following Mendieta’s death. Her reviews and essays have been published in frieze magazine, ArtReview and the Guardian, among other places. She is co-editor of The White Review and contributing writer at granta. Shola von Reinhold is a Scottish writer. Her debut novel, LOTE, was published by Jacaranda Books in 2020. LOTE won the Republic of Consciousness Prize and the James Tait Memorial Prize. www.sholavonreinhold.com
Bod Mellor (b. 1970) is an artist based in London. They have been exhibiting internationally since the 1990s and are included in the collections of: the Tate, the Arts Council and the British Council. Ellie Hoskins is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer from Wigton, Cumbria, now based in Liverpool. Her work is diaristic and frank, combining slapstick millennial nihilism and humour with an immersion in the rituals and details of everyday working life. Recent projects include a text installation on the exterior of Bluecoat gallery (Liverpool), a solo exhibition at OUTPUT gallery (Liverpool), and a live reading of a short story for Full of Noises festival in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. www.instagram.com/elliehosk/
