Your Ecstatic Self is a programme of recent artists’ moving image, exploring processes of self-discovery, curated by Abirami Logendran and Morgan Quaintance.
From sexual and spiritual liberation to states of heightened awareness and presentness reached through physical practice, the programme is punctuated by recordings of James Baldwin reading from his classic novel Giovanni’s Room.
In contrast to the epiphanic encounter’s ‘mystic instant’ (the single moment in which the hitherto secular subject converts to a given theological position) each of the works in this programme explore processes of transformation over time. As such, works are driven by the force of different mental and physical realisations unfolding across the duration of each film.
A Q&A with Abirami Logendran and Morgan Quaintance led by London-based artist and filmmaker Chiemi Shimada will follow the screening.
The screening is supported by Office for Contemporary Art Norway.

Programme
Good Friday (受难日), dir. Xiaolu Wang, US 2025, 9 mins., English
A dragon dance troupe, an aikido class, an ice skating rink. Three scenarios or scenes through which the sensation of falling, or learning to fall, become metaphysical ruminations on modes of existence that draw strength from letting go.
Your Ecstatic Self, dir. Rehana Zaman, UK 2019, 30 mins., English
Viewed from the passenger seat, Sajid drives through nondescript semi-urban spaces relaying a journey of self-discovery that maps paths through astrology, Islam, and the philosophy and practice of Tantra.
ALDONA, dir. Emilija Škarnulytė, Lithuania 2013, 13 minss., Lithuanian with English subtitles
In the spring of 1986, Aldona lost her vision and became permanently blind. The nerves in her eyes were poisoned. Doctors claimed that it was probably due to the Chernobyl power plant explosion. The film follows her through a daily sojourn to Grutas Park, touching both the past and the present.
Full Out, dir. Sarah Ballard, US 2025, 14 mins., French with English subtitles
In 19th century Paris at the Salpêtrière Hospital, patients were hypnotized on stage to reproduce the symptoms of hysteria for public audiences. Over a century later, high school cheerleaders are fainting en masse. Full Out is the inaugural work in a suite of films investigating the intricate threads between historical accounts of mass hysteria, the body's capacity for knowing, and the ways collective resonance can both fracture and heal.
