The Velvet Underground’s self-titled debut album may not have sold many copies, as Brian Eno once pointed out, but everyone who bought one went out and formed a band.
Todd Haynes’ new documentary explores the group’s origins in 1960s New York, their connections with Andy Warhol, the success (or lack of it) of their storied debut – and their afterlife as one of rock’s most important and iconic groups.
Haynes draws together in-depth interviews with band members (John Cale, Moe Tucker), fans (Jonathan Richman) and other key players with never-before-seen performances and other archive recordings, films and artworks. The result is a suitably immersive look into how the Velvets fulfilled what Cale describes as their creative ethos: “How to be elegant and how to be brutal.”
