John Huston’s directorial debut, adapted from Dashiell Hammett’s novel, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year – and retains all of the hard-boiled, sharp-edged appeal that has made it one of the most beloved film noirs in the Hollywood pantheon.
When tough San Francisco private detective Sam Spade (an iconic Humphrey Bogart) learns his business partner has been murdered, he soon gets entangled with a deadly band of international thieves (Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre) who will lie, double-cross and murder to obtain a small, jewel-encrusted statue known as ‘The Maltese Falcon’– with Mary Astor as the femme fatale tempting Spade into a dark web of lies and death. Magnificent performances maintain the suspense to the very last frame of this 1940s classic.
