ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
A London Palestine Film Festival exclusive, Bashar Shammout’s dynamic live show-and-tell presents footage and sound samples created in Palestine between 1968 and 1982 – an era that exemplifies the political and creative explosion in sound design.
Shammout’s presentation will cover everything from the way folk songs were appropriated by nationalist filmmakers in the spirit of the revolution to the creation of experimental film scores designed to revolutionise listeners’ imagination. Just as they did in film through the creation of the Palestine Film Unit, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) worked to create and preserve Palestinian musical heritage in order to protect the country’s narrative and propagate an essence of self-determination.
The event will also feature a discussion chaired by researcher and archivist Hazem Jamjoum.
