Song Without a Name (Canción sin nombre), dir. Melina León, Peru / Spain / USA / Switzerland 2019, 97 min., Spanish and Quechua with English subtitles

Georgina (Pamela Mendoza), a pregnant and desperately poor Quechua woman living on the outskirts of Lima, hears a radio advert for a clinic offering care to expectant mothers. After she journeys to the clinic and gives birth to a baby girl, she is quickly and unceremoniously sent home – and when she returns the next day to collect her baby, she finds that the clinic, and her daughter, have vanished.

Set during a period of economic crisis and political upheaval in 1980s Peru and based on a real-life incident, Melina León’s debut feature is all the more poignant and personal given that León’s father was one of the journalists who originally broke this disturbing story. Exacting black-and-white photography, the film lends force and immediacy to this sorrowful, ripped-from-the-headlines tale of corruption, exploitation and loss.
