This special programme brings together four shorts by directors who featured at the ICA’s recent FRAMES of REPRESENTATION film festival.

Rosa Barba (Aggregate States of Matter) investigates how man-made landscapes often become deeply enmeshed with both political agendas and utopian visions. Disseminate and Hold examines the complex relationships between the Minhocão (or ‘Big Worm’), a controversial elevated highway running through the heart of São Paulo, and both the buildings that surround it and the citizens who live in its shadow. 

Camilo Restrepo (Los conductos) centres this musical short on a man who learns his daughter has been brutally murdered by her husband, and on his struggle to balance his need for solace with his urge for revenge. La bouche is loosely based on the story of Guinean percussion master Mohamed Bangoura (‘Red Devil’), who also stars in the film.

A stream, a river, young people passing by. A crossing at night to get to the beach of Hell. Orfeo is a poem in three paintings inspired by the myth of Orpheus and the landscapes near the Franco-Swiss border that defined the childhood of filmmaker Isabel Pagliai (Tender).

Ana Vaz (Apiyemiyeki?) describes her 16mm cine-poem as ‘an encounter, a hunt, a diachronic tale of looking and becoming… As in a game, as in a chase, the film errs between character and land, predator and prey.’ Darting camera movements appear to track a young girl through high grass, as a sound loop conjures up memories of colonialism. But the beauty of the collage rests on the impossibility, for the viewer, of letting this past pass.
