John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection
Institute of Contemporary Arts
John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection, dir. Julien Faraut, France 2018, 95 min., English

Screening at the ICA as a companion piece to Barney Douglas’s new documentary McEnroe, Julien Faraut’s 2018 cinematic essay marshals hours of previously unseen footage into a penetrating portrait of a sportsman at the height of his powers.

In 1984, John McEnroe was in his fourth consecutive year at the top of the tennis rankings – and on 10 June that year, he walked on to Court Central at Roland Garros on a 42-match winning streak to play face Czech newcomer Ivan Lendl in the final of the French Open. A distant cousin of Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s Zidane: A 21st-Century Portrait, Faraut’s documentary eschews talking heads in favour of archival footage that’s both breathtaking and hugely revealing, capturing the essence of this very singular sporting genius.
