Jazz on a Summer’s Day
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Jazz on a Summer’s Day, dir. Aram Avakian and Bert Stern, USA 1959, 83 min., English, U

Shot beautifully at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, Bert Stern’s classic feature is among the first concert films ever made – and remains among the very best. Richly atmospheric from the first beat to the last note, the film sets glorious performances by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry and gospel legend Mahalia Jackson against a seductive evocation – an immersion, almost – in the affluent, fashion-magazine cool of the festival and its picture-postcard New England surroundings.

For these screenings, we’ll be presenting the feature in its brand new 4K restoration, which has made Stern’s landmark movie look even more seductive than ever.
