ICA EXCLUSIVE Karpopotnik
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Karpopotnik, dir. Matjaž Ivanišin, Slovenia 2013, 48 min., Serbo-Croatian with English subtitles

Screening as part of ICA EXCLUSIVE, Matjaž Ivanišin’s contemplative cinematic portrait documents the changing places and people of northern Serbia.

Exactly 50 years ago, a young film director named Karpo Godina set out to explore Vojvodina, a semi-autonomous region in what was then northern Yugoslavia. Part of the powerful and political ‘Black Wave’ school of directors, Godina never completed Imam jednu kuću (I Have a House), the film he planned to make – and so in 2013, Matjaž Ivanišin (director of Oroslan, which premiered at the ICA during FRAMES of REPRESENTATION 2020) effectively finished the job for him.

Ivanišin weaves together excerpts from Godina’s film with his own newly shot footage, creating a tapestry portrait of a region that little known and less understood in this part of the world.
