Alma (Maren Eggert) is a single fortysomething workaholic who lives and breathes her job as an anthropologist at a prestigious Berlin museum. Desperately seeking not love but research funding, Alma agrees to take part in an experiment: spending three weeks living with Tom (Dan Stevens), a handsome and intelligent charmer who scientists believe could be Alma’s ideal partner. The twist is that Tom is an android, and not a fully formed one at that: an alpha male in beta testing. Can he make her happy? And for how long?
Inspired by an Emma Braslavsky short story and shot during the pandemic, the latest film from Maria Schrader (Unorthodox) is a screwball comedy for the algorithm age– a boy-meets-girl story with a futuristic twist at its heart. Blessed with brilliant performances throughout (including Eggert, in a role that won her the first ever gender-neutral Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at this year’s Berlinale), I’m Your Man is a captivating exploration of love, romance – and just what it means to be human.
