ICA EXCLUSIVE Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary, dir. S.R. Bindler, USA 1998, 98 min., English

With the prize of a lifetime within your grasp, how long could you stay standing?

SR Bindler’s 1997 cult classic spotlights two dozen small-town Texans as they compete at a local car dealership to win a gleaming new Nissan Hardbody pick-up truck. The event is a simple contest of endurance and dedication – whoever can remain standing the longest with one hand on the truck will get to drive it home.

Bindler skilfully captures and weaves together several days of lunacy, laughter, struggle and heartbreak, but Hands on a Hardbody is more than a documentary about a competition. It is a remarkable study of camaraderie, faith and determination – the ultimate human drama.

This is an ICA Exclusive project.

Curated by Black Country New Road as part of their performance at the ICA.
