Presented at Locarno Film Festival, Tyler Taormina’s feature debut reveals a director interesting in blending aesthetics from crowd-pleasing teen movie and an ominous, dystopian undertone. Taormina excels at turning the familiar into the unfamiliar: the sun-glazed tropes of the Californian teen movie give way to a ceremonial reckoning, the all-American celebration of prom becomes an uncanny ritual, and even a perfectly banal ham on rye sandwich comes across as sinister fare.
