The longest-serving public health leader in Washington DC, Fauci has previously overseen the US responses to HIV/AIDS, SARS and Ebola – but the coronavirus, and the Trump administration’s predictably unpredictable response to it, brought him a new and wholly unexpected level of worldwide fame.
John Hoffman and Janet Tobias’ sympathetic portrait of the 80-year-old public servant features insights and contributions from a disparate cast of characters – among them George W Bush, Bill Gates, Bono, Susan Rice, plus activists, patients, family and friends. But the focus is the unassuming Fauci, whose mix of diplomacy and candour has won him enemies over the past 18 month – and many more friends.
