It doesn’t take long for Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning) to realise her marriage to distinguished writer John Ruskin (Greg Wise) is a sham. When Ruskin refuses to consummate their union, apparently seeing Gray less as a wife and more as a muse, she soon falls for the charms of the charismatic Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge) – and shocking polite Victorian society in the process.
Claudia Cardinale, David Suchet, Derek Jacobi and Julie Walters join the ensemble cast in Richard Laxton’s fine-tuned historical drama exploring the real-life love triangle that scandalised 19th-century England – written by and co-starring Emma Thompson, and receiving a welcome rerelease for 2021.
