Earwig, dir Lucile Hadzihalilovic, UK / France / Belgium 2021, 114 min., English, 15

Adapted from the chillingly bizarre novel by Brian Catling, the first English-language feature from acclaimed French director Lucile Hadžihalilović is a journey into the claustrophobic life of a singular young girl and her mysterious guardian.

In an unnamed European city around the middle of the last century, a middle-aged man named Albert (Paul Hilton) keeps watch over a young girl named Mia (Romane Hemelaers). Confined to her apartment, Mia has dentures made of ice, which Albert must fit for her every day. Time passes, and a man rings to ask after the young girl. And then one day, Albert is told that he must prepare the child to leave. Her third feature as elusive and atmospheric as its two precedessors, Innocence and Evolution, Hadžihalilović proves the perfect choice to adapt this one-of-a-kind story.
