The year is 10191. A spice called ‘melange’ is the most valuable substance known to man – and its only source is the planet Arrakis, controlled by Duke Leto Atreides (Jürgen Prochnow). When the rival House of Harkonnen fights to reclaim the planet, it falls to Leto’s son Paul (Kyle MacLachlan, making his big screen debut) to try and take it back.
Based on Frank Herbert’s futuristic sci-fi novel, David Lynch’s neglected 1984 epic stands the test of time as both a daring piece of filmmaking and a richly enjoyable blockbuster, defined by the director’s trademark attention to detail. As Denis Villeneuve’s new adaptation of Herbert’s book hits cinemas, this is a welcome chance to return – on the big screen – to what has become one of Lynch’s most discussed, debated and cherished pictures.
