ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
Some 50 years after it first stunned cinema audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ decline-of-civilisation novel remains a profoundly unsettling cinematic vision of nihilistic violence and social control. Withdrawn from distribution for nearly three decades by Kubrick himself, the film is now back in cinemas – and is presented in the upgraded ICA Cinema in this spectacular new 4K restoration.
Set in a flamboyantly stylised near-future, A Clockwork Orange centres on Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his band of droogs, a gang of disenfranchised teenagers who revel in narcotic cocktails and acts of ‘ultraviolence’ – at least until the state gets involved. Beethoven will never sound quite the same again.
