This talk explores key concepts from the exhibition Christopher Kulendran Thomas: Another World with the artist’s collaborator Samir Bantal (director of AMO, the internal think tank of architecture office OMA) in conversation with the architecture writer Shumi Bose and design strategist Stephanie Sherman. Central to Kulendran Thomas’ film installation The Finesse (2022) is the possibility of architecture to shape the hybrid spaces that emerge from the collapsing of digital realities and physical experiences. What kinds of networked social forms could come about between IRL and other realities and how could new plural / networked / cooperative identities shape cities?
Samir Bantal is the director of AMO, the think-tank within OMA founded by Rem Koolhaas in 1998 to apply OMA’s architectural thinking beyond architecture, to the fields of design, technology, media and art. Together Bantal and Kulendran Thomas contribute to earth.net, a new project bringing together collaborations across art, architecture and technology to build shared tools for cooperative economies.
Stephanie Sherman is a strategist, writer and producer working across design, technology, architecture, and culture. She is currently working with theorist Benjamin Bratton on Antikythera, a program on planetary computation based at the Berggruen Institute in Los Ángeles, and produces marathon broadcasts with Radioee.net (a nomadic translingual radio station). She is working on Auto, a book about Fordism and planetary platform automation.
Shumi Bose is a curator, writer and editor with a focus on the interrelation between architecture and speculative finance. As a curator she has worked at the Royal Institute of British Architects, and co-curated Common Ground together with David Chipperfield at the 2012 Venice Biennale, and Home Economics, the British Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale which took a speculative view on housing and the future of dwelling.
Rapid Realities is presented in collaboration with KW Institute for Contemporary Art in conjunction with a parallel presentation in Berlin of the exhibition Christopher Kulendran Thomas: Another World.
